Shenzhen Universiade International Scholarship Foundation (hereinafter referred to as “SUISF”) is a dedicated foundation with specially raised funds to support the international students with a view to carrying forward the spirit of the Universiade Shenzhen 2011 and promoting cultural and educational exchanges among international young people.SUISF is the first scholarship foundation in the name of Universiade in its history.
SUISF is mainly used to fund overseas students(including students from Hong Kong and Macao) for studying in the Chinese mainland,fund Chinese students from the Chinese mainland for overseas (including Hong Kong and Macao) study, fund and conduct friendly international exchange activities that are conducive to Shenzhen’s educational undertakings, as well as fund charity activities that are in line with the purpose of the SUISF.SUISF was established in Shenzhen on August 13, 2011 and funded 11 students from home and abroad as the first batch.
At the opening ceremony of the World University Presidents Forum in 2011, the then mayor of Shenzhen, Xu Qin, awarded certificates to 6 of the first batch of students.Among them, 5 international students from Belarus, Brazil, Cameroon, Morocco and Thailand respectively studied at Shenzhen University, Beijing University of Chinese Medicine, Sun Yat-sen University and South China University of Technology.The only Chinese student was Zou Dujian, who studied at the Shenzhen Research Institute of Harbin Institute of Technology and was about to pursue a Ph.D at the State University of New York.
Wang Rong, then secretary of the CPC Shenzhen Municipal Committee, said that some of these students were torchbearers of the Shenzhen Universiade, some were volunteers for the Universiade, some participated in the lighting ceremony of the main torch of the Universiade, and some took part in the construction of the Universiade venues. They were representatives of promoting, participating in and serving the Universiade, elevating the spirit of the Universiade and advancing cultural and educational exchanges between China and foreign countries.Wang Rong said that in the future,SUISF would achieve sustainable development through government funding, voluntary donations from legal persons, natural persons or other organizations, as well as interest and investment income.The foundation had established a council and a board of supervisors to carry out public welfare activities in accordance with the law, and relevant information would be disclosed to the public for social supervision.
Since the SUISF was established, under the guidance of the Shenzhen Municipal Education Bureau and under the leadership of Liu Yingli,the founding chairman, former member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Shenzhen Municipal Committee and executive vice mayor, the foundation has been progressing in an orderly manner.The number of funding projects has increased from the first batch of 2 to 10, with a total of 926 international students supported (including 578 overseas students and 348 Chinese students receiving full-time education of master’s degree or higher at foreign colleges and universities), with a funding of 32.937 million yuan. Supporting students covers 80 countries and regions.
On January 11, 2022,SUISF held a council election meeting and Huang Guoqiang was elected as new chairman.
